Common Dental Emergencies We Treat

Severe toothache

Tooth pain that wakes you up at night or won’t respond to over-the-counter pain medication is a sign something is wrong beneath the surface. Don’t wait it out — it won’t get better on its own and it will get more expensive.

Cracked or broken tooth

A crack that hurts when you release your bite — not when you bite down — is a sign of a fractured tooth. This needs to be evaluated and treated before the crack spreads to the root.

Knocked-out crown or filling

A lost crown or filling exposes the tooth structure underneath and can cause rapid sensitivity and decay. We can re-cement or replace it same-day in most cases.

Dental abscess

A pimple-like bump on your gum, combined with pain or swelling, is a dental abscess — a bacterial infection that will not resolve on its own. This is a medical urgency. Call us immediately.

Knocked-out tooth

If a tooth has been completely knocked out, put it in a glass of milk or hold it between your cheek and gum. Get to our office within 30 minutes for the best chance of saving it.

Broken or chipped tooth

Sharp edges from a broken tooth can cut your tongue and cheek. We smooth, bond, or crown broken teeth depending on the extent of the damage.

What to Do Before You Arrive

  • Toothache: Take over-the-counter ibuprofen (if safe for you). Do not put aspirin directly on the tooth or gum.
  • Lost filling or crown: Dental wax from any pharmacy provides temporary coverage. Call us.
  • Knocked-out tooth: Milk or saline — not water. Do not scrub the root. Call immediately.
  • Swelling or abscess: Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek. Do not apply heat. Call immediately.
